Vehicle Insurance FAQ

Everything You Need to Know Before You Buy

Your most common vehicle insurance questions — answered clearly.

Yes — third-party insurance is compulsory under Section 146 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 for all vehicles used on Indian roads. Penalties for driving without insurance include a fine of ₹2,000 for the first offence and ₹4,000 for subsequent offences, plus up to 3 months imprisonment. Traffic police can also seize your vehicle at a checkpoint. Always carry your insurance certificate when driving.
IDV (Insured Declared Value) is the current market value of your vehicle — the maximum amount the insurer will pay if your vehicle is stolen or declared a total loss. It is calculated based on the manufacturer's listed selling price minus depreciation based on vehicle age. A higher IDV means a higher premium but better protection in case of total loss. Our advisors help you set the correct IDV — not too low (under-insured) and not too high (unnecessarily inflated premium).
NCB (No Claim Bonus) is a discount on your Own Damage premium for each claim-free year — ranging from 20% after year 1 to 50% after 5 consecutive claim-free years. It belongs to you as the owner, not the vehicle — so it transfers when you buy a new car or switch insurers. NCB is reset to zero if you make even one claim. For small damages, it is often better to pay for repairs yourself and preserve your NCB — our advisors help you calculate the break-even point.
For vehicles up to 5 years old, almost always yes. Without zero-dep, the insurer deducts depreciation on replaced parts during claims — metal parts at 50%, plastic parts at 30–50%, rubber and glass at 30–50%. This can reduce your claim payout by 20–40%. With zero-dep, you receive the full repair cost. The add-on typically costs 15–20% extra on your OD premium — significantly less than what you would lose to depreciation in a claim.
Cashless repair is only available at network garages empanelled by your insurer. You can check the list of network garages on your insurer's website or app. If you get repairs done at a non-network garage, you will need to pay upfront and claim reimbursement later. Our advisors identify the nearest network garage for your insurer and vehicle make during the claims process — so you never need to search yourself in an emergency.
Yes, you can renew an expired policy, but there are consequences: You lose your accumulated NCB discount if the gap exceeds 90 days. The insurer will likely require a physical vehicle inspection before renewing an expired policy. Driving on an expired policy is treated the same as driving with no insurance. Our advice: Renew at least 30 days before expiry. We send you a reminder — and handle the renewal process for you so you never lapse by accident.
Yes — NCB belongs to you and is portable across insurers. To transfer your NCB when switching: obtain an NCB retention letter from your old insurer, provide it to the new insurer at the time of renewal, and the new insurer will apply the same NCB discount. As long as you renew within 90 days of expiry and have not made a claim, your full NCB is preserved. Our advisors handle this transfer process completely.
